About the role

Note:  This position is based in the Warren, NJ office.

This newly created leadership position is critical in transforming the Academy (learning) organization to deliver programs and initiatives in a new model based on collaboration between internal resources and distribution partners. The focus of the content will span the continuum of 3Shape’s hardware (intraoral and laboratory scanners), software, applications, integrated solutions in addition to other core competencies required by 3Shape positions (such as collaboration, influence, demo/presentation, etc.).   The individual will lead a team (8 to 10) of professional clinical trainers in the delivery of programs targeted toward 3 types of participants:  the end-user (most commonly dentists, dental assistants, lab technicians, etc.), dealer partners and their trainers and internal 3Shape colleagues.  This position has the accountability to develop new advanced curriculum and to continually evaluate and adjust the current model and offerings to meet organizational goals.


Your key responsibilities will be to:

1.  Lead the organization in the implementation of NA’s Academy training model

  • Work collaboratively with 3Shape’s Global Academy, Commercial Leadership, local Account and Territory Management and other stakeholders to develop a learning model that meets the needs of the current and future organization.
  • Drive the implementation of the Academy model through effective leadership and stakeholder management
  • Develop annual, quarterly and account-specific training plans, ensuring alignment with Account Management and Business Development teams and business goals.
  • Ensure synergy and alignment with Global Academy organization, programs and leaders
  • Implement technology-based training programs based on organizational, trainer and participant capabilities
  • Ensure effective allocation of resources, both financial and Trainers, to deliver upon goals
  • With an eye toward simplification, consistency, and cost-effectiveness, develop and support initiatives that align with priorities
  • Identify future curriculum priorities based on trainee needs, business environment and organizational priorities


2.  Identify and lead learning and development initiatives that focus on key competencies required for 3Shape positions (account management, collaboration, stakeholder management, customer service, etc.)

  • Participate in an organizational-wide needs analysis tied to internal 3Shape positions and the key competencies that have been identified
  • Identify and prioritize resources necessary to address needs based on scope, timing and cost
  • Implement initiatives according to project plan and organizational timing
  • Evaluate outcomes as to learning objections.  Adjust as necessary.
  • Align with Global HR initiatives and priorities 

3.  Overall accountability for NA Academy-related external relationships

  • Develop and nurture relationships with peer colleagues in organizations partnering with 3Shape, in part to search out opportunities for training collaboration, new curriculum, training methodology, etc.
  • Maintain collaboration with 3Shape’s Marketing organization to support Key Opinion Leader (KOL) activities
  • Manager and Initiate training/learning opportunities through the use of 3rd-party vendors, if identified.  

  4.    Perform as an inspirational organizational and team leader

  • Provide insight, information and feedback to 3Shape leaders, peers and others as to the academy management function and strategy, training, learning and development activities, partner trends
  • Understand and manage to organizational budgets, including the review and approval of Trainers expense reports.  Reconcile differences.
  • Provide consistent (and in line with 3Shape priorities) feedback, coaching and direction to Academy Trainers and other 3Shape employees regarding performance and goal setting.
  • Participate in regular one-on-one reviews using it as an opportunity for feedback
  • Ensure Trainers have the appropriate training and resources necessary for them to perform their role
  • Initiate opportunities for cross-regional, cross-team projects and initiatives
  • Be an ambassador of and follow company guidelines and policies, regulations, legislation re: 3Shape products and management of employees
  • Participate as the first line for escalation from Trainers
  • Responsible for developing and adhering to Academy budget


5.  Participate as an active and engaged leader of the NA Leadership Team

  • Participate in weekly review meetings with General Manager
  • Initiate and lead prioritized projects to help support the 3Shape Inc. business
  • Display behaviors and communications that reflect the 3Shape Valu3s—be a role model for others
  • Engage with other members of the NA Leadership Team and international colleagues to provide effective problem-solving and escalation
  • Collaboratively engage with other 3Shape leaders on ensuring adequate staffing and support for Trade Shows and events.  Manage Trainer expectations.
  • Keep National Account Director and other Account Directors appropriately aware of business activity or issues related to training

Other Duties:

  1. Accountable for the 3Shape 1099 (contract) Trainer program
  2. Use CRM, training surveys and other means of data analytics to continually evaluate and adjust programs and resources
  3. Actively participate in 3Shape’s project around distribution partners on-boarding


To succeed in this position, you will need to:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a business, management, psychology, engineering or technology-related
  • A minimum of 7+ years in progressive learning and development leadership roles with increasing accountabilities with at least 3-5 years in a senior leadership position, demonstrating strategic and operational planning and program implementation
  • Experience A minimum of 2+ years in a commercial organization either in a training, sales, customer support role
  • Experience with on-line/remote learning platforms and best practices
  • Demonstration of strong managerial skills at multiple levels of an organization—this includes budgeting/forecasting, etc.
  • Experience in a team environment with multiple stakeholders and decision-makers at all levels in the organization. 
  • Outstanding people management skills with experience in building and developing teams, motivation, corrective action, conflict management, setting goals, recognition and rewards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong presentation skills a plus
  • Experience with a consultative, relationship-oriented organization

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • A Master’s in Psychology, Adult Learning, MBA
  • Experience in the dental industry
  • Experience in an organization using the indirect channel
  • Extensive experience in or with global organizations
